for their tenth release, voodoo down has again chosen to debut a new act to add to their label roster. andy harper and nic ford have been making music together for over a decade but began releasing in earnest under the name maddermodes in 2014 on their own label, shift coordinate points. they have since put out records on the labels millions of moments and night drive music. their handful of releases have already drawn support from top names like move d and nick höppner, and its clear that the duos sound is only getting more refined with each successive record. the ep entitled emprical evidence is a wholly cinematic piece of work, spread across four tracks that unravel slowly, unified by a theme of pumping syncopated rhythms under sprawling pad and string progressions. its easy to get lost in the thick arrangements, and the inventive use of samples and melodic elements invite repeat listening. equally suitable for early morning hours, ultra-deep techno sets, or quiet home listening sessions.

your silent faces second release – the first on his own label tethys records – continues the deep, brooding techno trajectory set by his first track on fiedeltwo, a place where arms bend backwards. title track red rain is urgent yet considered: subtle acid lines swirl and build against bright defined percussion while the bassline builds towards infinity. it reveals ysf’s inspirations from motorik music, early industrial bands like nitzer ebb and deep techno heroes including sandwell district and rrose.kleinian transform takes techno to a place where georgio moroder meets front 242 and basic channel, creating robotic space-tracks with dub disco melodies, insistent bassline and mighty crescendos. its a late night dancefloor track influenced by dj hell and francois k, but equally by coil and new order. scorched earth closes the red rain ep with a post–apocalyptic melancholy, a soundscape which nods to kraftwerk and boards of canada. this is the track ysf wants you to hear at the end of times, recalling the blistering winds of post-nuclear fallout: darkly spacious, with a questioning melody. the ep was mastered by keith tenniswood at curvepusher.

the label’s first reference, hooded001, is a two tracks ep called “los dinosaurios” by personal mythologies. the two cuts have been recorded from live improvs by the artist. the a side, homonym to the title of the ep is a slow, rugged and abrasive techno jam that passes the 11 minutes mark. the second extract, “cuando los dinosaurios dominan la tierra” is an ambient odissey of fourteen minutes that features a static melody around which different melodic and rhythmic elements are developed.

benales opens the e.p. with radiate, a track where you can clearly hear his influences of the american school of 90s minimal techno. long time dj but new on the production side, this is benales first effort on vinyl. after his initial masterpiece on knotweed records (kw006) and a handful of releases on demented (hiss 1992) and krill, opuswerk is back on knotweed with displacement, a trippy, hard hitting, analogic techno attack: no concession on this one! gonzalo md has already delivered the goods on both knotweed (kw004 and kw011) and decision making theory (dmt 006), as well as a fantastic ep recently on extrasolar. here, with sharp oscillation, he keeps developing his unique style, producing a highly percussive, almost samba-like, piece of techno. label owner philippe petit closes the e.p. with indian summer, a track moving along a warm bassline, bearing some recognisable krautrock influences.

italian producer and be free label head jäger makes his debut on underyourskin records with a haunting ‘mystical journey‘ that turns out to be a playful minimalistic techno approach in the beginning, before evolving into a dark synth driven and more techhouse dominant tune gaining its dancefloor eligibility with a heavy baseline. louis kolben, part of agents of time, takes on the technoid approach to create a wobbling stomper that could easily tear in any location it is played at. ‘mizar‘, the ep‘s second track, partly connects with regards to content to ‘mystical journey‘ but focussing merely on that dreamy aspect that claims its listeners and leads one to a state of trance. steffen sonnenschein builds up the track slower to delay its peak that hits heavily when the synth sounds are let loose and set the pace throughout the end.
